Until leaving Barcelona in 2021, Leo had spent his entire career with the club, often considered as the greatest player of all time, Leo has won numerous awards and scored huge amount of goals.

EARLY LIFE

Lionel Andres Messi was born on 24th of June 1987 in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. Messi is the third of four children. His parents names are Jorge Messi and Celia Cuccittini.

Jorge Messi was a steel factory manager while Leo’s mom worked at a magnetic manufacturing company.

Leo on his father’s side is Italian and Spanish, his great grand parents were immigrants from Spain and his moms were also Italian immigrants in Argentina.

Leo grew up in a average class family and had passion for football from a very little age.

Messi was Born with a growth hormone deficiency but that didn’t stop him, he would accompany his older brothers and cousins who were professional to football games.

At age four, Leo began his football journey, joining a local club called Grandoli and his father was the coach.

His grandmother Celia was his biggest inspiration as she always accompanied him to games. She died when Messi was eleven and every goal he’s scored since then has been dedicated to her.

At age six, Messi joined his favourite club Newell’s old boys in Rosario. Messi became an instant phenomenon scoring over 500 goals in six years for different age levels of Newell’s.

When Messi was 10, he was diagnosed of growth hormone deficiency that threatened his career. He needed serious treatments and his family didn’t have the funds.

All efforts to finance his health hormone treatments proved futile, clubs like River Plate and others couldn’t afford to help as the Argentine economy was collapsing at the time.

With some of his family relatives living in Catalonia, the family arranged a trial with FC Barcelona.

After back and forth, Charly Rexach finally signed Leo producing his contract on a piece of paper napkin on 14th December 2000.

In february 2001 the family relocated to Catalonia and Leo’s Barcelona journey begun.

Leo’s first year wasn’t all that rosy as he’d hoped, he couldn’t play for la masia except in friendly games due to some transfer inconsistencies with Newell’s. Without Football, Leo struggled, it wasn’t perfect at home either, he was alone with his father.

Messi found it difficult to blend with other la masia kids, he was quiet and withdrawn and everyone else thought he was a mute.

After the first year, Barcelona were finally able to register Leo in 2002. And that’s when his true journey started.

La masia had incredible talents then, with kids like Cesc Fabregas and Gerard Pique. He completed his growth hormone treatment at 14 and became a very important piece of the la masia team.

The la masia dream team tore apart opponents for fun, scoring loads of goals in the process. After that season offers came for Messi abroad which he refused and chose to stay at Barcelona instead.

CLUB CAREER

Messi grew through the FC Barcelona la masia system, playing for different categories from 2002 up until after he made his first team debut on 16th November 2003 against Jose Mourinho’s FC Porto at 16 years Four months and 23 days old.

Leo scored goals for fun, tearing teams apart with his dazzling left foot, skills and techniques. Abilities that earned him comparisons with the great Maradona right from a tender age.

When Messi arrived the first team, then superstar Ronaldinho took him under his wings and took care if him, telling the others he believe the 16 year old kid would become the best player in the world someday.

After playing for the lower side, Messi signed his first professional contract at the age of 18 and was fully promoted to the first team in 2005.

In the summer of 2021, after the club had fallen to the bad management of previous president Josep Maria Bartomeu, Barcelona was left with no money in the bank to renew Leo’s contract so he completed a free transfer to Paris Saint Germain where he started a new phase of his long career.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER

Messi has Spanish and Argentine dual citizenship and was eligible to play for either but opted to play for Argentina instead.

Messi appeared and won the u-21 tournament for argentina in 2001 also winning the Golden boot and Golden ball Awards in the process.

In 2006 he was part of the Argentine team knocked out by Germany in the quarterfinals of the world cup as he was only used mostly as a substitute.

He won the olympics in 2008 and would go on to lose one world cup final and three copa America finals as he search for his international trophy.

Messi went on to become the Argentine all time top scorer and finally got his hands on a copa America trophy in 2021 as they beat Brazil 1-0 in the finals played in the Maracana.
